Chloe Short
Landscape design & maintenance

I trained as a Theatre Designer and spent 10 years in London designing sets for music videos, TV commercials, short films and Theatre.

Despite my love for the challenges and the people, the film world did not satisfy my interest in the environment and nature. From a design perspective, nothing can really compete with the natural world: plants and their architecture, rock formations, water, the elements, it's impossible to improve upon their artfulness.   Because of this fascination I have a very strong desire to preserve natural areas and to be mindful of how we use land – whether that means choosing organic vegetables to encourage pesticide-free agriculture, or buying second-hand and re-using wherever possible. For me, designing gardens and outdoor environments is the perfect way to combine all of the things I’m passionate about - art, creative design and the natural world.

In 2006 I began to pursue my new career. I studied Horticulture at Merritt College, Oakland and Berkeley Extension whilst also working as a fine maintenance gardener and completing many installations in and around the San Francisco Bay Area. I was lucky enough to find wonderful and generous teachers, not only at school, but also in the work place. It seems to me that those of us who have chosen to be a part of this field, many who like me, have moved from a different career, cannot help sharing our enthusiasm for it.
