When designing a space I take great care to think through every detail, from the cultural needs of the plants, to the practical needs of those who will be using the space. My aim is to achieve functionality first and, through solving problems simply, the aesthetic and 'art' of the installation will come to the fore.
I draw upon my work as a set designer to provide the skills necessary to manage a project from the design and planning stages through to the finished product: from drawing plans and providing visual sketches, to carefully monitoring budgets, sourcing materials and finding skilled and reliable tradespeople to help me complete the project.
I am a strong advocate of environmentally-friendly practices and endeavour to create habitats that encourage wildlife and achieve a natural balance wherever possible. With a strong sense of what's truly useful I try to avoid wasteful behavior, whether it's the overuse of water, or the discarding of materials or objects that could otherwise be used, not least because it's inefficient.
Maintenance is necessary to keep a garden looking its best. The right culture for the plants - water, sun-exposure, suitable soil and room to grow, are all crucial. A stressed plant is prone to disease and this, in most cases, is easily avoided without using harmful chemicals.
